In order to obtain a salvage title, there are a number of steps that you should take to make the entire process easy and safe. Bear in mind that the purchase of salvage cars should comply with the various rules of your sate. The first critical step is to acquire insurance for the car. The insurance company should provide proof that will help the documentation process, making it seamless and compliant.

When applying for a salvage title, you should have the fundamental, accompanying details and documents available. These may include the bill of sale and many other vital details. Another important thing to do is to record the mileage of the car. This should appear clearly on the title of the salvage car. There should also be proof that the car has undergone a thorough inspection to ascertain its safety. The safety inspection might include an emissions test to prove that the salvage car is safe for use. However, these rules usually vary depending on the requirements of the state.

What type of parts should you use for your salvage vehicle is a critical question. As insurance companies’ insurance decisions have a direct link with the list of parts being used before inspection, you need to carefully select the ones that give you your preferred insurance coverage. Let us first understand the terms themselves.

Aftermarket parts are similar parts like the brand manufacturer but they can offer inferior quality and are not from their original manufacturer; these are not the same parts as the brand uses for its assembly line. On the other hand, OEM stands for original equipment from the manufacturer; the same item with the same quality from the same supplier is used as what would be used on the assembly line at the manufacturer’s plant. OEMs are suppliers to the original car brand while aftermarket parts are replica from unsolicited vendors.

According to federal law most insurance companies will let you decide your own parts. You can pick from OEM and from aftermarket items. Insurance companies, however, prefer people to get aftermarket items, as they are less expensive. However, they have an indifferent attitude if the customer himself pays for high prices of OEM parts. Most of the aftermarket parts arrive in the US from China and they offer inferior quality as compared to OEM parts. Insurance companies do not want you to add up on their risky engagement. Here, the federal laws have generalized the dealing while some States—for example, New Hampshire—only allow the OEM parts. Virginia, on the contrary, allows only aftermarket items to go on your salvage auto.

Whether you use aftermarket or OEM parts, you need to convince the insurance companies that their preferred vendor listing or parts details offer inferior quality and are economically less feasible, and that is why you have to do otherwise. Once insurance companies find your claims to be convincing enough and you have invested accordingly, the insurance decision will go in favor of you.

While many states specify in detail their laws and regulations regarding declaring a car as salvaged, Ohio had obscure and confusing regulations. In the past, Ohio had ambiguous guidelines and specifications regarding salvage vehicles and their associated titles. For instance, DMV laws did not explain the criteria for salvage vehicles in a concise and understandable way. This lack of detail led to numerous vehicle inspection and registration confusion and mishaps.

Ohio roadway reports in 2009 and 2010 showed that this lack of regulation enabled many fraudulent activities to bypass the state law and even compromised road and driver safety. Later in 2010, the state reformed its policies and clarified the requirements and regulations on salvage vehicle declaration and title changes with specific terms and conditions.

Today, the state has different levels of vehicle title categories. If the repair value is less than the vehicle’s value, then it receives a “repairable” title. When the repair value is higher than the actual value of the vehicle, it is deemed a “total loss.” The law regarding salvage titles applies to vehicles that cannot feasibly be restored to their original condition. Due to the clarification of the term, drivers now have a better understanding of how insurance companies will cover their vehicle. When an insurance company declares a vehicle as salvaged, you can keep the vehicle in some instances, as long as you have reasonable repair plans.
